is the news industry in decline?
In the last 20 years, the news industry has went from being dominated by big papers like the Sun, the Guardian and the Times who controlled large majorities of the market with just Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere controlling over 2/3s of the British market. To most of the market being spread digitally over 100s of different outlets and websites. I major cause for this would be the recent rise in technology and the capabilities of it growing. A quote from a former editor of a news paper sums up the reason why this affects the market saying "Newspapers used to own a story for 24 hours, bow they own it for 24 seconds." This means back when newspapers got exclusive stories, it could take another outlet at least a day to print the same story, now with the rise in technology, any outlet, website or media personality could replicate it with in seconds. This this devalues a stories importance to a newspaper and could lead to newspapers either failing, or having to create and find much more original stories in an attempt to stay relevant.
In order to combat these challenges, big newspapers are also deciding to move more digital with papers like the guardian and telegraph having prominent web pages along with social media accounts in order to attract attention. Many of these sites have instituted paywalls as a way of still making money off the content which, much like a physical subscription, required a small payment to access daily content. This was introduced to attract younger to middle aged viewers as they may be more likely to pay to see the news from a more trusted source, but are less willing to go out and by a paper from a shop or subscribe to deliveries. Furth more, newspapers are producing larger and more frequent stories in order to grab a viewers attention and outside their smaller competitors.
In future is see Most major newspapers moving digitally until it becomes the new normal, as the generations who tends to buy news papers slowly dwindles and the current digital age grows. I don't see this as an end to the major papers as they have proven that they can adapt with the times and will continue to do so, even if that means abandoning newspapers entirely to continue.
