Radio One
'The mission of the BBC is to act in the interest of the public serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high quality and distinctive output with services which inform, entertain and educate.'
-Lorde John Reith, former director of the BBC
The BBC Radio is different to all other radio stations as it is funded by the public and isn't independently owned like other radio stations such as Capital FM or Heart.
This is because the BBC is a PSB a Public Service Broadcaster. It is not controlled by the government however and is mostly funded through the TV licences that most people pay each year which costs about £154.40. If you watch TV or listen to radio you must pay a TV license fee, their are many payment options in order to make the licence affordable for all. (A black and white Tv licence costs £52 annually) Those found without a TV license could face prosecution.
What we will look at
We will look into depth of radio one's support of new music through analysing their published playlists, and comparing the performance of key playlists of commercial stations. Due to radio one not requiring viewers to make money, the station does not need to produce profitable content, whilst most of its competitors will have to find ways of making money through means such as advertisements and will be very focused on achieving the most listeners possible.
As the BBC are aware of the changes in the market and media environment and are attempting to adapt and compete with newer rivals like Netflix and Disney. As instead of everyone intaking their entertainment and news in the living room, More than half of us watch TV or films in bed now and a fifth while commuting. Whilst 61% of us read the news in bed, 45% while commuting and 35% while in the bathroom.
How many people listen to the radio weekly?
a survey conducted showed that as many as 88% (44.8million) of Brits listen in to the radio weekly, with the average person listening to abut 20hpurs a week.
\radio ones target audience is young listeners between 15-29 and they aim to offer:
- a range of music
- support emerging UK artists
- provide a platform for live music
- broadcast at least 40 new documentaries a year
- offer at least 2 major social action campaigns, supported across daytime output and online each year, together with another initiative.
- News, documentaries and advice campaigns that cover
How can radio one say that they provide good value for money when their station targets a very niche audience?
Whilst Radio one do appeal to a smaller group of people than who pay for tv licence, they provide a very necessary service of reporting completely unbiased news, something which not many other news stations can promise. Further more the station aims to provide a wide range of music types such as jazz, rock, pop, rap and many other forms as well as giving new rising talents a platform to be heard. Finally, although their target audience is quite small with them mainly targeting ages 15-29, these ages are some of the most important in a persons life as in this time they will reach adulthood, join a University, begin working or even get married, therefore a radio station which is dedicated to providing unbiased news will ultimately help shape them as a person and help them make important choices in life.
