Semiology

 Semiology- Barthes

Meanings that are communicated through signs which are made up of the signifier and the signified. This process depends on the connotations of the sign.

Barthes uses the word myths to describe the way the connotations suggested by a sign have come to be seen as normal or natural.

The meanings created by these myths often reflect dominate values of ideologies.

Applying Barthes theory to Stranger things

Opening shots such as the Wheeler house give an idea of the social norm that the show may have with an idea of sub-urban domestic bliss, whilst the scenery showing hoppers home filled with beer cans and his gun may represent masculinity.

Applying to The Killing

Scenes where they find Nanna's underwear in the woods could symbolize the violence faced against women Denmark. As well as the fellow male detective who is often seen smoking r cracking wise about the scenario, showing he doesn't care too much.

They use a close up shot and high angle to suggest that the scientist is afraid, small and defenseless. This is typical of the cultural context and historical context of the ear as it could also be used to depict the fears of the cold war for instance. The character is clearly of high importance and as a result the show seem to depict that even those in charge who are successful academic adults are still left helpless. This gives the 'monster a new level of threat.

Editing

A majority of edits in tv dramas are straight cuts, these cuts are described as 'blink and you'll miss it' as you will often not notice them and see them more as just normal occurrences and not be aware that there are several cameras at work.
Fast edits are often used in tandem with dialogue as they cut from perspective-to-perspective of the interacting characters instead of focusing on one specific characters view.

Postmodernism- Baudrillard

Images and signs are now key features of our society

Postmodernism challenges the established order and calls into question fixed ideas about identity

Hyperreality is the idea that representation are now more powerful than reality and we cannot tell the difference between the two

Hyperreal is not a representation of reality and is rather a representation of representations.
