newspaper exam
There will be 4 news questions on our exam
we will need to:
- Apply theorists to the sources
- Explore media language/representation in the two sources
- discuss news relation to context (referring to case studies)
- Apply theorists to the news generally (referring to case studies)- will be given a choice between two theorists and asked to explain how well they apply
Questions 1 and 2
Two sources of newspapers on both ends of the political spectrum
Daily Mirror
- unflattering image of Theresa May
- Very little writing
- Strong language 'damned' having connotations of hell
Daily Mail
- heroic Image of the Tory leader
- More broadsheet style
For the daily mail, they try to represent Theresa May as a savior and trying to rengeite 'British spirt' viewing her as a great woman, meaning that the readers will also see her in this way.
The daily Mirror use a mixture of imagery and language to deride Theresa May with her face appearing to make her look foolish and the language such as damned degrading and questioning her ability to lead.
They also approve of the consistent use of Hall's theory of representation throughout the answer
In source a we see a front cover of the daily Mirror, in which we see a rather unflattering image of Theresa may, with the title reading Lies, damned lies' applying Halls theory of representation to the text we can see that the paper which is a center left one has a clear disliking of Theresa may and what she stands for, that being the conservative party and Brexit and therefore has chosen to mock her to their audiences choosing an image of her which my show her to be viewed as incompetent or foolish and using language such as damned which have sacrilegious and devilish connotations to paint her as more evil. Because we know that the daily mirror are a labor supporting newspaper, we can understand why they would do this as the audience they appeal to.
