Analyse the contrasting use of symbolic, technical and written conventions in the sources

Non-conventional
Conventional

Tabloids conventionally use short snappy titles and emotive language in order to invoke a reaction out of the reader, in source A we see this with the title reading 'Lies, damned lies and Theresa May'. However, in source A, we see they have subverted convention by talking about 'hard news' implying politics which is uncommon for a tabloid which tend to focus on soft celebrity or sports news. The source demonstrates a way in which newspapers can construct ideologies and viewpoints, as stated in Halls representation theory, the use of media conventions.

Media conventions are both clearly present in the two sources, the sources depict two different viewpoints of the same story, that being the general election and the conservative candidate of Theresa May. Firstly, source A the Daily Mirror use some typical conventions of their tabloid roots with a snappy emotive title of Lies, damned lies and Theresa May, the use of repetition in the title is meant to evoke emotion in the reader to make them feel as though they have been lied to as well as the use of the word damned having connotations with evil and sin further pushing the ideology that may has untrustworthy. Another typical convention of the tabloid genre it uses a close-up single image on its cover of May with a rather unflattering expression on her face. This is done to perhaps humiliate May and paint her as a foolish and unfit leader for the country with the tag line “Don't condemn Britain to another 5 years of Tory broken promises”.
