Theory of representation- Hall

Hall suggests that when analyzing representation the focus should not be on the relationship between the representation and reality rather the potential meaning construct

A key focus for representation analysis should be on who or what is represented, who or what is not represented and suggestions of difference

Representations may intend to fix preferred meaning but audiences may contest meanings.

"I think you should listen to your mother"
This line from Mr. Wheeler is originally viewed as quite carless and detached with him seeming more concerned with fixing his tv. In the scene he is not making eye contact once again showing his disinterest in the conversation. he also states "think" rather than just saying listen to your mother showing he has less power compared to his wife. We also see in the scene that Mr. wheeler is wearing glasses which can often be used as a way of showing a character as a nerd stereotypically.

empty beer cans could represent a feeling of loneliness along with his face pressed down in the couch, considering his position in the police force you could describe this as unprofessional.

Location- Originally the Duffer Brothers wanted Montauk as setting for a costal setting but had to move to Atlanta. They wanted the location to feel like a character with a sense of mystery. the small town vibe of hawking being seen by the government as a insignificant location.

Hawkins Indiana

5 words to describe the town.
Quiet, rural, compact, small, sleepy

The basic belief is that small towns are safe places when compared to big cities and are viewed as an ideal picturesque place. Many creators will tend to use this preconceived notion to subvert our expectations by revealing them to be backward or evil. There is often a stigma that the town will have about outsiders building its own sense of community with great hostility to anyone unknown. Stranger things also looks at the common stereotypes of small towns in the 80's by subverting from the stereotypes around race and gender with the main character eleven even appearing in typical female clothing only to 'fit in' before removing it, as well as the inclusion of a small towns hostilities towards people of different ethnic backgrounds such as there bullies reaction towards Lucas.
