Evaluate the relevance of Hesmondhalgh's Cultural industry theory in relation to long form television drama.

Hesmondhalgh's theory of cultural industry states that the media industry is controlled by a small number of media conglomerates who rely on repetition of popular genres, stars and narratives in order to achieve success. A great example which fits this narrative is Disney, who are know to remake old classics of theirs such as the lion king with popular actors in the roles, as well as repeat genres and narratives such as the additional 5 star wars movies they made over the last 5 years since acquiring the brand in 2012. When applying this theory to the long form tv drama, many of the contentions remain apparent as genres that see success will often be exhausted by the media industry and the conglomerates who see it as a way to minimise risks and ensure success, such is the case with the Nordic Noire genre which gained traction in the late 2000's after the wild success of shows like The Killing, The Bridge and Legacy leading to British adaptations of the genre and even an American remake of the Danish drama.

  1. Hi Ethan, well done on what you have produced but you need to be applying Hesmondhalgh's theory in relation to Stranger Things and The Killing and consider how it relates to these LFTVD's/ what are the limitations. It may be helpful if you attempt this question again using Mr O-P's youtube video to help you before your mock. If you send it to me directly via email I will be happy to provide you with feedback.
