Mainstream- Celebrity success/glamour, men as powerful, women as simply beautiful and nothing more, the young as thugs, minorities as a toll and criminals, the old as useless, homeless as drug addict's and lazy.

Explain why magazines outside the mainstream construct alternative representations. Refer to The Big Issue in your answer (10)

In the mainstream, sales are driven by profits, therefore its readers will expect a certain view of groups to be presented to them, because profits are the mainstream like the daily mails priority, instead of challenging these views they will tend to continue to reinforces this as to not rock the boat and affect sales, this can be seen with how certain social groups are presented such as ethnic minorities being viewed as a toll on the systems and bringing no benefit to Britain and are viewed as actually hurting Britain
Whereas the Big issue's primary concerns are spreading awareness and tackling social issues, they have no incentive to appeal to the mainstream representation for profit or sales purposes. this lack of an affect to sales allows them more creative freedom in the representations they put out and allows them to tackle the negative stereotypes that are constantly put out by the mainstream media. This can be seen it its issues where it will try to highlight historic Black Abolshonist Olaudah Equiano, in the issue it uses the tagline
