Radio one

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing BBC breakfast radio is how to hold on to its digitally native listeners who are increasingly moving online, preferring their own playlists to radio output. This is made worse for the show by the fact that many of these music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music not only offer you a choice in your own music, but provide the service at a much lower price than the £157.50 annually. This coupled with the fact that the target audience is between 15-29, ages which most tend to have little disposable income, mean more often tan not they will tend to go for the cheaper option.

 How has radio one evolved?

Presenters

Since its creation in1967, a staple and reflection of radio ones broadcasting has been represented through its choice of  presenter. Over this 54 year period their has been a total of 15 official breakfast presenter starting with Tony Blackburn, who served for 6 years, all the way to Greg James who is presenting his third year at the moment. Overall the presenters growth and change in personality types seem to show that Radio one was able to adapt to current trends, with host like Zoe Ball being a clear answer to the growing rave scene in the 90's. Or Moyle's crass and deliberately edgy humour appealing to the more rebellious teenage audience, all presenter's brought something unique to their broadcast in order to attract listener, seen most recently with Greg James's use of social media for fan interactions.

what is unique about radio one's evolution?

one of the most unique things about radio one as a broadcaster is its implementation of modern technology into its daily shows. This is most prevalent in modern broadcasts as Greg James as he made it apparent in his first show how much he wants to use social media to interact with audience members. Furthermore, due to the decline in radio listeners in the past few decades, radio one has began integrating more modern means of distribution through the likes of social media, YouTube and streaming services such as the Iplayer. Using these methods they have been able to reach their target audiences of 15-29 year olds as these ages are much less likely to use.

Radio ones role within the BBC

BBC radio one, whilst being the moat listened to radio broadcast of the BBC's 16 broadcasts and its flagship station. It only receives £54m of the £653m radio budget, making up just a little over 8.3%. Where as as much as radio 4 and local radio stations have a combined budget of  £270m at roughly 42% of the annual budget. Whereas when it comes to their flagship television programme, BBC One, a total of £1.4bn is spent from a £2.4bn budget, roughly 60% of the entire television budget.

in an article by the sun newspaper, it is revealed that Boris may be planning to cut the tv license fee with the paper proclaiming the license to be outdated. considering the fact that the Sun is a right-wing newspaper. They support the view of the Prime Minister as he is head of the Conservative party. They also attempt to appeal to the middle to working class sector.

The article also describes this view to cut the fee as popular among the working class, this could be due to the fact many families in Britain do not use the BBC services like the television shows or radio broadcasts and therefore do not see it necessary to pay the £157 for an unused service. Another reason for a distaste of the license fee would be how outdated it is. With the surge in technology over the past few years the BBC has been made somewhat redundant with its lack of much content and lack of innovation. While streaming service are able to provide much more entertainment for fractions of the cost.

What makes radio one so successful?
I believe that the main reason why BBC one is so successful is because of its interactions outside of radio. Because many young people may see the radio as a more archaic form of entertainment, the branching to social media and other platforms like YouTube allow them to attract a young audience more associated with these forms of entertainment than radio.
